4D Glossary: Every Term a Player Actually Hears, Explained

Every hobby grows its own language, and 4D's is a cheerful mix of English, Malay, Cantonese and Hokkien. Whether you are new to the game or just tired of nodding along at the kopitiam, here is the vocabulary, in plain words.

The game and its numbers

4D
The four-digit game itself: pick 0000–9999, win if your number appears among the draw's 23 winning numbers.
1st / 2nd / 3rd prize (首奖 / Hadiah Pertama)
The top three numbers of a draw, paying the largest prizes. Small bets win only on these.
Special prize (特别奖 / "starter" in Singapore)
Ten numbers drawn each night paying a mid-tier prize to Big bets. Singapore Pools calls them starters.
Consolation prize (安慰奖 / Saguhati)
Ten further numbers paying the smallest prize tier — the most common way a Big bet wins.
Draw number
The official serial of a draw, e.g. 410/26 = the 410th draw of 2026. Useful for verifying a ticket against results.
Special draw
A government-gazetted extra draw, usually on a Tuesday, added around festive seasons. A full normal draw in every respect.

Bets and tickets

Big / Besar / 大
Bet type that wins on all 23 numbers, at lower payouts (RM2,500 per RM1 on 1st prize).
Small / Kecil / 小
Bet type that wins only on the top three, at higher payouts (RM3,500 per RM1 on 1st prize).
Straight (ordinary) bet
Your digits must match the winning number in exact order.
Box / mBox / Permutation
Covers every arrangement of your digits at full prize rates — you pay per permutation (up to 24).
iBox / iPerm
Covers every arrangement for a single RM1, with the prize divided by the number of permutations. Cheap coverage, smaller wins.
Roll (R)
Fixes three digits and "rolls" the fourth through 0–9: ten numbers on one ticket at ten times the stake.
Bearer ticket
What a 4D slip legally is: whoever physically holds it can claim. Lose it, lose the prize — photograph your tickets.

Kopitiam vocabulary

Kena (中 / strike)
To win — "kena 4D" is the phrase every player wants to say. "Kena tepi" means landing a special/consolation rather than the top three.
Ong / Heng (旺 / 兴)
Luck, auspiciousness. An "ong" outlet is one reputed to produce winners — reputation only, as the odds are identical everywhere.
Nombor ekor
Malay for "tail numbers" — the everyday Malay name for 4D. "Kedai ekor" is the 4D shop; "ekor haram" refers to illegal bookies.
Pau / bao (包)
To "wrap" a number — buying it big across bet types or operators, often after a strong dream or omen.
Zhong ma piu (中马票)
Cantonese for striking the lottery; "ma piu" (horse ticket) preserves the game's turf-club ancestry in everyday speech.

Systems and structures

Jackpot games
Side games (Magnum 4D Jackpot, Toto's Star/Power/Supreme, Da Ma Cai 1+3D Jackpot) whose top prize rolls over until won, reaching tens of millions.
5D / 6D
Sports Toto's five- and six-digit games where lower prizes are won by matching leading/trailing digits of the winning number.
1+3D
Da Ma Cai's name for its classic pick-four game, inherited from turf-club prize logic. In play, identical to 4D.
House edge / RTP
The share of stakes the operator keeps versus returns. Classic 4D returns roughly 65% of stakes as prizes over the long run — see the odds guide.
Claim window
The period (generally six months from draw date) in which a winning ticket can be redeemed before the prize is forfeited.

Results-page vocabulary (as used on this site)

Live / draw window
Roughly 7:00–8:30pm on draw nights, when results are being released progressively and pages auto-refresh.
Partial
A draw whose specials/consolations are out but whose top prizes are still being drawn — the board fills as the hall proceeds.
Final
A fully released, verified result. Ours republish the operators' official numbers; the operator remains the authoritative source for any claim.
